Metrics are an integral part of community management. They are like a stethoscope for measuring your community’s health and general performance.
They also help you to indirectly keep track of your performance as a CM.
Metrics are a way of knowing what to improve and what to scrap.
Below are some pointers of metrics measurement.

Community growth/membership - No of current members minus no of starting members divided by no of starting members x 100.
Churn rate (members who leave at a period) - No of lost members in a time period divided by no of members at start time x 100.
New members vs churn rate - No of growth rate minus no of churn rate divided by churn rate x 100.
Engagement metrics (active members) - This can be determined by calculating the quarter over quarter (QoQ) or year over year (YoY) changes. A good CM tool or social media platform can track this number easily.
Average posts/comments (per member) - No of posts or comments divided by total no of members.
Event participation - No of participants divided by total no of members.
Conversion rate - No of conversions divided by no of members x 100.
Referral/advocacy rate - No of referrals divided by no of members. Note that certain apps calculate this automatically and differently.
Despite running to Arts class, we still encounter Maths once in a while. Na wa o.
So, try out these formulas for your next metrics measurement and let me know how it goes by replying to this email. Goodluck!
